Claire Ferreira
Downside Up Furniture, 2009

Three distinct elements create the Downside Up Table: a mould, a liquid and a frame. Resin escapes from the wooden base through separated slits, to form a smooth flat surface once turned upside down. The exact same quantity of material runs through each slot; except that the setting time finally draws what is going to become a unique tabletop. The emergent surface gives the object its function whereas the original base structures it, a dialogue between solid and fluid materials, between designed elements and less predictable ones.
