Personalized Kettle, 2009

We know that boiling the required volume of water for our needs can save a significant amount of energy. All the street lights in the UK could be powered each year on the amount of energy wasted by kettles which has been calculated at 1,270,000,000 kilowatt hours. Overfull kettles waste energy but if we do not know how much water is needed to make a cup of tea we can easily overfill them.

The standard water gauge uses an objective numerical value to indicate the water level. Because cups do not have standardized numerical values and because we dont think about tea in terms of liters this gauge is not very helpful. A kettles capacity could be measured with a fixed mug volume but this is problematic because cups come in different sizes and people have their own preferences for how full the cup should be. In the standard kettle design there is no active interaction between the water level in liters and the volume of water you may actually need.

The measuring system on the Personalized Kettle can be adjusted to suit your personal use. You can pour in your own cup of water and then move the ring to indicate your desired water level. When you fill the kettle the ring marks exactly the volume of water you need to fill your mug. A second ring allows you to mark the level for two cups or a series of different coloured rings could show the capacities of a variety of mugs.
